Muscle Length-Tension
Biomechanics Q Course
Module 3
Creation of a length-tension function for skeletal muscle sarcomere under conditions of maximal isometric tension. Sarcomere geometry is inferred from published electron microscopy studies and tension is derived based on the sliding filament model of contraction. Students create a piecewise function composed of multiple linear components. This function relates sarcomere length to % maximal tension. Assuming that the length-tension relationship is a linear scaling of the sarcomere relationship, students use their function to make inferences about bicep muscle contration.
Two versions of the module are available. The Unanswered version is a Mathcad 13 document suitable for distribution to students to complete for credit. The Answered version is a PDF document showing the complete and correct math regions (answers) for the module. However, essay-style text answers are not shown. A completely answered module (including text answers) in Mathcad format is available upon request for further development.
