Ion Channels
Introductory Modeling in Biology Q Course
Module 3
Introduction to probability and stochastic behavior in the context of membrane ion channels. Students begin by simulating coin tosses, and then expand this idea to simulate the independent opening and closing processes of a single ion channel. Subsequent exercises expand the model to include multiple channels, and then finally multiple channel gates on each channel.
Two versions of the module are available. The Unanswered version is a Mathcad 13 document suitable for distribution to students to complete for credit. The Answered version is a PDF document showing the complete and correct math regions (answers) for the module. However, essay-style text answers are not shown. A completely answered module (including text answers) in Mathcad format is available upon request for further development.
