Myoglobin / Hemoglobin
Biochemistry Q Course
Module 10
Oxygen binding to myoglobin and hemoglobin is explored. After briefly considering myoglobin binding kinetics, students move on to consider a full model of hemoglobin binding (the Adair equation). Students consider and reject the possibilities that hemoglobin binding is independent, or alternatively, fully cooperative. The Hill equation is then presented. Using the Hill equation and published data on human hemoglobin binding, students generate a linear model of the Bohr effect.
Two versions of the module are available. The Unanswered version is a Mathcad 13 document suitable for distribution to students to complete for credit. The Answered version is a PDF document showing the complete and correct math regions (answers) for the module. However, essay-style text answers are not shown. A completely answered module (including text answers) in Mathcad format is available upon request for further development.
