Financial Support
Fellowships
- Each year the University of California, Davis offers fellowships and graduate scholarships
for entering and continuing graduate students. Stipends are approximately $20,000
plus fees. Because the number of awards is limited and the competition keen, only
students with distinguished scholarship will be considered. In the evaluation of
applications, consideration is given to the extent and quality of previous academic
work, evidence of ability in research or professional skill, intellectual capacity,
and the promise of productive scholarship. All appointees are expected to devote
full time to graduate study and research on the Davis campus.
- Applications for fellowships and graduate scholarships are considered once a year
and must be received by Graduate Studies by January 15. Awards are made by March
15, and each candidate is notified by mail. Awards are made for the subsequent academic
year, beginning in the Fall Quarter.
FAFSA Requirement
All graduate students who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents or immigrants are
required to file a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA)
as early as possible, but no later than March 1. This form, submitted directly to
the Federal Student Aid Program Office, Iowa City, Iowa, is used to determine financial
need only, a component of the eligibility criteria for many fellowships, and for
all forms of financial aid. The FAFSA form may also be obtained via their Web site
at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov
Group Support for Ph.D. Students
In addition to covering the cost of in-state fees, the GGG offers Ph.D. students
five years of support at the level of approximately $26,000 per year. Funding will
be from various sources including teaching assistantships, Graduate Student Researcher
positions, traineeships, fellowships (unless stipulated for domestic students only),
or any combination of the above. Students are expected to maintain at least a 3.00
GPA and otherwise demonstrate good standing within the group for continued eligibility
for this support. It is GGG's policy not to provide financial support from group
resources to master's degree students.
Teaching Assistantships
Teaching assistantships (TA-ships) are available to qualified students
for a variety of undergraduate courses in the life sciences. These positions are
offered through individual departments rather than through the graduate group. Therefore,
interested students need to contact these departments directly.
