Financial Support
The three mechanisms for financial support are:
Fellowships and stipends
Teaching assistantships (TA) for the Exercise Biology Program and the Section of Neurobiology Physiology and Behavior
Graduate Student Researcher (GSR).
To ensure consideration for UC Davis fellowship awards, you must fill out the appropriate fellowship forms and apply by January 15. You may also apply for fellowships from federal (NIH and NSF) agencies and private foundations. The deadlines for these fellowships vary greatly, but you can visit Graduate Studies to learn more about some of these programs. The Exercise Science Graduate Group (EXSGG) is awarded a limited amount of block grant support that can be awarded as stipends or fellowships to qualified students. The recipients of these awards are decided by members of the EXSGG committee based on merit.
Teaching Assistantships
Undergraduate programs award Teaching Assistantships to graduate students qualified to assist with lecture or lab instruction, or grading. You must apply to individual undergraduate programs for a TA position. Typically our graduate students are qualified to TA laboratories offered by the Exercise Biology Program (EXB). A TA application for the EXB program is provided here in PDF format (TAapplication.pdf). If you have training in other areas such as chemistry, engineering, or biology, you need to apply to those departments directly for TA positions.
Graduate Student Researcher
Faculty members award GSR positions to students to conduct research in the faculty member's laboratory. Faculty support varies considerably across campus. It is the student's responsibility to contact faculty and inquire about financial support prior to starting a research project. All students should file a FAFSA form upon admission to the graduate program and every year thereafter until they graduate. This form is necessary for any federal financial aid. Federal aid can improve your chances of being hired as an RA because it can reduce the amount a faculty member directly pays you.
