Admissions Information

Applications for admission should be made as early as possible but no later than January 15th. Please use the following link to access the Biophysics application: http://apply.embark.com/grad/ucdavis After January 15th no new applications will be accepted.

  • The application fee is $70 for domestic applications and $90 for international.  Fees may be paid by credit card or e-check.  The appropriate fee must be paid before the application will be considered complete, and a fee must be paid for each application submitted.

  • Letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically through the online application.  Please do not submit recommendation letters until the online service is available.

  • Please do not submit transcripts until you have marked your application as complete and submitted it.  Please submit only one transcript for each university or college you have attended.  That transcript will be made available to faculty in each graduate program to which you have applied, as well as for the review of the fellowship application.   Transcripts should be sent directly to the graduate program to which you are applying.  If you are applying to more than one program, send your transcript(s) to your first-choice program or to the program of your first completed application.

  • The GRE General Exam is required for all Biophysics applicants. A GRE subject test (in physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related subject area) is not required but is highly recommended for students who plan to apply for fellowships, training grants, or internal funding. Please use these codes for reporting electronic scores from the Graduate Record Examination General Test. Institution Code: 4834 and Department code: 0222.

  • TOEFL or IELTS scores are required for international students. Institution code: 4834 and Department code: 36.

The following materials are required for admission (all applicants), and should be submitted either online or directly to the Biophysics Graduate Group, Graduate Group Complex, 310 Life Sciences , University of California, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616.

  1. Application for Graduate Admission, UC Davis Graduate Studies (online, see above).
  2. Original transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
  3. Application for Fellowships and Scholarships which is included in the Graduate Studies application (optional)

All international applicants should read the information on the Graduate Studies web site.

The graduate group cannot review an application until all of the above components are received.

Undergraduate Preparation for Admission

  • General Requirement:
    • Undergraduate degree (B.S. or B.A.) in a biological or physical science or certain engineering disciplines.
  • Suggested Undergraduate Courses:
    • One year of calculus.
    • One course in statistics.
    • One year of physics.
    • One year of general chemistry, including quantitative analysis.
    • Physical chemistry.
    • One year of organic chemistry.
    • One course in biochemistry.
    • One course in genetics.
    • Introductory biology courses, including general biology, developmental biology, and cell biology.
