My broad research interests encompass the role of individual behavior in shaping large-scale population structure and distribution. I am particularly interested in applying an understanding of how animals use the environment at local and larger scales to the selection and design of protected areas.
My current research focuses on patterns of distribution and abundance of nomadic birds and the behavioral and ecological mechanisms underlying the population dynamics of these species. Specifically, my research will focus on how individual behaviors, including habitat selection and foraging movements, translate into the large-scale patterns of distribtuion and abundance of red crossbills. By integrating theoretical and empirical approaches in behavioral and population ecology, I hope my study will provide valuable new perspectives on the general mechanisms underlying individual movements and population dynamics. Also, understanding how nomadic species respond to habitat modification should be useful for evaluating the long-term viability of many other species faced with large-scale habitat fragmentation and other environmental changes.
