Jones joined the UC Davis faculty in 1998 as director of the Center for Neuroscience and professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the UC Davis School of Medicine. In the same year, he ascended to the presidency of the international Society for Neuroscience. In 2004, he was elected to membership in National Academy of Sciences. Through these and other leadership positions, he promoted the integration of approaches in cellular and molecular biology to neuroscience research and recruited scientists across multiple disciplines to address fundamental questions about brain function and dysfunction in neurological and psychiatric diseases. After his retirement, Jones continued to conduct research and held a 35 percent appointment as a professor in the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology.

Frederick Lorenz

Dr. Lorenz joined the faculty in 1938 and in 1964 became the first chair of the newly formed Department of Animal Physiology. After becoming a professor emeritus in 1974, he studied human psychophysiology with a special emphasis on biofeedback. An accomplished painter and sculptor, he helped found the Davis Art Center.

Professor Toft had a bachelor’s degree in fisheries and wildlife biology from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. in population biology from Princeton, and carried out her career as a professor of evolution and ecology at UC Davis, from where she retired in 2010. Over her time at UCD, her research was published in various prestigious journals, and she also authored on a major work on parrots.
In addition to her professional work, she was also deeply involved in various charitable causes, such the promotion of the environment, and collie rescue, especially in the resolution of animal hoarding cases, where she worked tirelessly to provide care and find new homes for abused animals.
