Research Interests

Respiratory Toxicology and Cell Biology

Our laboratory complements the expertise of the Center for Health and the Environment (CHE) with expertise in environmental health and respiratory toxicology. We train undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students in lung pathobiology, toxicology and research. We contribute to UC Davis specialized research facilities as the supervising laboratory for the Cellular and Molecular Imaging (CAMI) core at CHE. We also host a weekly journal club on particulate matter and ozone that is attended by graduate students from multiple labs and graduate programs. CHE is a center of excellence within UC Davis' John Muir Institute of the Environment (JMIE). The focus of research at CHE is the effect of environmental agents, including chemicals and radiation, on the health of humans, animals and other organisms. To investigate these issues, researchers at the CHE conduct experiments with animals, organisms, cells, and molecules to measure environmental exposures as well as health outcomes associated with them. The central mission of the center is as follows:

  1. Encourage, coordinate, facilitate and perform multidisciplinary research related to environmental exposures and the causes and prevention of adverse health effects.
  2. Facilitate exchange of information and communication between academic scientists, resource agencies and the public.
  3. Provide research and training opportunities to professional students, graduate and undergraduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows.
  4. Provide specialized research facilities, expertise and equipment to investigators at the center, and on the UC Davis campus, for use in toxicology, epidemiologic and environmental studies.
