Research Contribution

Research in my lab has been used by regulatory agencies for risk assessments of the organophosphorus pesticide chlorpyrifos and of polychlorinated biphenyls, and these risk assessments have driven revisions of state and federal regulatory policies for these compounds.

Research Interests

Neurotoxicology

The long-term goal of my research program is to examine how environmental stressors interact with genetic susceptibilities to determine the risk and outcome severity of neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegeneration. Altered patterns of connectivity are associated with neurological deficits; therefore, we are currently investigating how environmental contaminants and inflammation perturb neuronal connectivity as determined using biochemical, morphogenic and electrophysiological endpoints. We are also developing biomarkers of OP neurotoxicity and testing novel therapeutic approaches for protecting against the neurodegenerative effects associated with neurotoxic pro-convulsants. Our research relies on histological, behavioral and molecular techniques in both in vivo (guinea pigs, rats and transgenic mice) and in vitro (primary neuronal cultures) model systems.
