Profile Introduction

Dr. Bers' heart research lab is an international group, using multiple state-of-the-art techniques to understand how normal and diseased heart cells function from the molecular detail to the whole animal level.There are typically 3-4 PhD students, 5-10 postdocs or senior researchers, as well as 2-3 technicians and several undergraduates.

Research Contribution

Dr. Bers' group has made seminal and recognized contributions in: 1. Cardiac Ca and Na transport, Excitation-Contraction Coupling and Electrophysiology 2. Heart Failure (HF) and Arrhythmias (mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies) 3. Calmodulin (CaM) and CaMKII signaling in heart 4. Mitochondrial Ca transport, function and energetics 5. Computational Modeling (integrating all ion transport, channels and signaling pathways

Research Interests

Cardaic Myocyte Physiology & Pathophysiology

Dr. Bers is an internationally renowned leader in cardiovascular research, particularly molecular-cellular and animal studies aimed at understanding regulation of the normal heartbeat and how things go wrong in pathophysiological states like heart failure and arrhythmias. He has a highly productive track record of >450 published papers (>200 in last ten years) mostly in high impact journals (e.g. >90 in Circ Res/Circ alone), that are highly cited (>40,000 times; h-index=107). He has received numerous national and international research awards, held leadership positions in numerous scientific societies, editorial boards and grant review panels. He has been continuous funded as Principal Investigator for >35 years by multiple NIH grants. He has trained >75 Ph.D. students, postdocs and junior faculty, most of which have gone on to very successful careers. He has established an extensive network of collaborations with labs throughout the U.S. and internationally, and has been an effective leader of large multi-institution research groups and has been a Chair of Biomedical Sciences, Physiology and Pharmacology departments. Much of his scientific work has focused on Ca and Na transport, signaling and electrophysiology in the heart, including fundamental characterization of individual ion transporters and channels, integrated electrophysiology, E-C coupling, confocal fluorescence microscopy, myofilament activation, mitochondrial Ca/energetics, GPCR, calmodulin and CaMKII signaling, systolic dysfunction, arrhythmogenesis and nuclear signaling (e.g. in hypertrophy and heart failure), always with an eye toward both integrative aspects of cardiac function/ clinical relevance and drilling down to more fundamental quantitative mechanistic understanding and also developing computational models of cellular ion transport and electrophysiology.
